PreviewCast #047: A PreviewCasted Review of 2007

Well, another year comes to a close. Who would have thought that after 18 months of us restarting PreviewCast in July 2006, we would still be going at it today? Although the latter portion of 2007 saw us going on long hiatuses, 2007 did grant us with 26 great episodes of PreviewCast. For the second year in a row, we celebrate New Year’s Eve by bringing you a sample of some of our best moments from the year.

This PreviewCasted Review of 2007 features the funniest PreviewCast moments (guess how many arguments are on here?), mixed in with some of the best interviews and special episodes that we’ve had, along with two of the best music breaks from the year, all mixed into a 100 minute feature presentation.

The following clips are featured in this Best Of episode (the parentheses indicated the timestamp when the clip starts during this episode):

If you want to hear some other Best Of PreviewCast clips, you may be interested in our 2006 Year in Review episode as well. :)

Obligatory Warning: This episode does contain some clips from our past episodes which contain a few occurrences of Explicit content, therefore the Explicit tag has been added to this episode.

We wish you a very Happy New Year and are looking forward to many more great episodes in 2008!

PreviewCast #046: Catching Up on Lost Time

PreviewCast is officially back, with our first full-length episode in almost 3 months! Even better, co-host Laurence Anderson returns with his first PreviewCast appearance since July!

On this slightly-shorter Boxing Day episode, Larry and Douglas chit chat for awhile about the holidays, Mac OS X Leopard, and some of our early Macworld 2008 predictions. During the conversation, we talk a bit about One Laptop Per Child and the Amazon Kindle. Douglas also talks a bit about the Tech Podcast Network’s recent 24 Hour Podcast Marathon, and Larry tells him a bit about the importance of AppleCare. Also, Skoker joins us for a few minutes from his work at Buffalo/Niagra International Airport via his cell phone. Hey, it’s the end of December, so there’s not much news. Nevertheless, we are making a comeback!

All this and more on this triumphant return episode of PreviewCast!

Post-Holiday Site Cleanup Scheduled

Have you ever had one of those holidays where you get so many gifts that you realize that you’re going to have to clean up your room (or apartment, or house, etc.) in order to make room for the new things? Well, this year, I don’t exactly have a need to do quite so much cleaning up around my room, so instead, I’ll be dirtying my hands up with some PreviewCast.com cleanup after the holidays.

Okay, that was kind of a weird segway. Nevertheless, PreviewCast.com will be going down on Thursday, December 27th, starting at Noon EST (9 AM PST) for some site upgrades and reorganization. The site will still have the same theme and same artwork when it comes back online, but WordPress will be fully updated, features will be added, things will be cleaned up. Depending on how long it takes to get things done, the site will be done for at least a few hours and hopefully not longer than the whole day.

When the site maintenance is finished, PreviewCast #046 will be up and waiting for you. That’s right, we have scheduled an episode for tomorrow morning at 11 AM EST. Larry has said that he is 90% sure that he’ll be there, and we’ll be talking about the holiday, recapping the year 2007 in tech news, and looking ahead to the year 2008–this means New Years Resolutions and Macworld Predictions. Assuming nothing goes wrong (knock on wood), we’ll have a fresh PreviewCast episode waiting for you on Thursday as soon as the site comes back online.

So again, just to recap, expect PreviewCast to be down for maintenance Thursday 12/27 at 12 PM EST, and it will stay down for a few hours. As usual, I will be keeping updates on the maintenance on my Twitter so that you can follow the progress.
–Douglas Bell

Update 12/27: The site maintenance has been completed. PreviewCast #046 will be released within the next hour or two, stay tuned…

PreviewCast #045SE: Returning Home for the Holidays

Douglas records some holiday wishes and some general updates about when and how PreviewCast will return. Again, if you are interested in being a regular PreviewCaster, please send Douglas an e-mail.

From all of us at PreviewCast, have a Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Winter Solstice, Happy Hanukah, Kwanza, Ramadan, or whatever you’re celebrating (or not celebrating), and a Happy New Year. Look for our grand return, coming soon…

TPN’s 24 Hour Podcast Marathon

I’ve got some exciting news to share from our friends at the Tech Podcast Network. This Friday, December 21st, Todd Cochrane (the CEO of RawVoice, parent company of the Tech Podcast Network) will be doing a 24 Hour Podcast Marathon. The marathon will begin at 11 AM EST (16:00 UTC) on Friday, and end at the same time on Saturday, and will be simultaneously broadcast on TalkShoe and Ustream.tv.

During his 24 hour vigil, Todd will be raising money to be donated to the One Laptop Per Chld Give One, Get One campaign. The goal will be to raise $1200, which will send three laptops to children overseas, plus three additional laptops which will be given away to randomly selected donors.

In addition, Todd will spend the marathon interviewing various members of the Tech Podcast Network community, and at 5:30 PM EST (22:30 UTC), he will be doing a live recording of his own Geek News Central podcast.

I will be one of the tech podcasters to be interviewed during the marathon. I am currently scheduled to be appearing at 9 AM EST on Saturday morning (1400 UTC), and will talking both about PreviewCast and about phpBB Weekly. Note, however, that this time is still subject to change.

So, please feel free to listen in to any portion of the marathon, and also donate to the OLPC campaign! Hope to see you all there.

Update: I have updated the post to reflect the new time. I will instead be on the live podcast Saturday morning at 9 AM EST (1400 UTC), and this is official now. Todd will have been on the thing for 21 hours at that point, so it could be a mumbling discussion, but feel free to listen in if you’re interested!
