In honor of the release of WordPress 2.3, which just happened a few minutes ago, actually, and because we were all too busy to record a regular episode this week, we’re releasing an interview that Douglas recently did with Lorelle VanFossen, the blogger behind Lorelle on WordPress, the author of the book Blogging Tips: What Bloggers Won’t Tell You About Blogging, and (arguably) the star of PreviewCast #040, the one where Douglas interviewed a number of WordCamp attendees. In this interview, Douglas and Lorelle discuss the importance of blogging, how and why Lorelle got started with her Lorelle on WordPress blog, the significance of personal bloggers, how advertising changes blogs, the interesting art of genealogy, and her new book. If you’re a seasoned blogger, a new blogger, or are considering to become a blogger, you’ll want to check out this excellent interview, and you’ll probably learn a couple of new things as well.

Apologies in advance for a couple of weird sounds that occurred occasionally during the show. The mute button on my microphone wasn’t working properly, as I found out later.

Apple has claimed (with yet another Steve Jobs keynote) that The Beat Goes On. But now, we are here today to finally end a six-week hiatus (!!!) and announce to the world that The PreviewCast Also Goes On! Even if the world doesn’t want us to go on, well, we’re here anyway. So there.
Anyway, Apple’s event sees the latest round of Apple’s annual holiday refresh to the iPod line. Apple kicked out new colors for the iPod shuffle and iPod nano, which don’t look as good as the old ones (in our humble opinions). Meanwhile, the iPod nano gets “squattier” and gains the ability to play video, which means that it no longer fits properly in Douglas’ hand and in terms of features, it’s indistinguishable from the iPod classic, which is now bloated in how much storage it offers. The iPod touch is basically an iPod wrapped with an iPhone-like interface, and we go through each of the iPhone features that the iPod touch doesn’t (and should) have. Then Apple lowers the price of the iPhone by $200 (and drops the 4 GB version), which angers all those early adopters. Would it be safe to say “We told you so?” We then recap on our experiences of the new iMac, iLife, and iWork, and then evaluate the controversy with social networking-spammer site exraordinare Quechup, and look at Computerworld’s Mike Elgan’s claims that Apple is the New Microsoft. And then, by popular demand (mostly from Skoker), Douglas reviews his recent trip on Virgin America, and Daniel reviews his external hard drive. And then we all start wondering when it will be that the iPod touch and iPhone will gain the Zune’s squirting capability…
All this and more on this triumphant return of PreviewCast!

Okay, so by now, I’ve gotten a lot of IMs from people asking me, “Will PreviewCast #043 be coming out by Christmas?” or something like that. The bunch of us have been quite busy recently–and I, in particular, have been very busy both dealing with the onset of school and trying to wrap up some unfinished projects that are leftover from summer. We do love doing PreviewCast, and Larry and I have agreed that we want to continue doing PreviewCast, because well, it’s fun. And from what I’ve been hearing from many of you recently, you also enjoy our episodes.
So just to break you into our plan, we’re going to take one more week off this weekend. (I’m taking advantage of the three-day weekend to take a major offensive against my page-and-a-half to-do list this weekend.) However, this Wednesday, September 5th, Steve Jobs will be doing another special keynote, this time for a music-focused event. Unfortunately, due to school, we won’t be able to follow the keynote live or post an episode an hour and a half afterwards, like we did with episode #042, however we will be recording and releasing PreviewCast #043 next weekend (either on September 10th or 11th) to do our recap of the announcements, PreviewCast style. We hope then to get back into the normal swing of things after that, and I’m also arranging for a couple of special guests to make some appearances in future episodes…
So stay tuned! PreviewCast is going to be coming back soon!
