All of our photos from the iPhone Launch Event at the Apple Store Burlingame can be found in this Flickr photoset. Thanks to Daniel Brusilovsky who helped take many of the photos while I was busy with PreviewCast production.

iDay at the Apple Store — A Video Message from Douglas Bell

I summarize all of my experiences at the Apple Store during the iPhone launch.

Stay tuned for photos to be posted on Flickr, plus the release of PreviewCast’s almost-live coverage of this crazy event.

PreviewCast Camps Out in Burlingame!

If you don’t live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you might as well skip this post, unless you like learning about the stunts we perform on this podcast.

Well, the Bay Area is going to be very busy next Friday when the iPhone comes out at 6 PM local time. TWiT/PixelCorps/Scott “I can’t shut up about the iPhone” Bourne will be doing something fancy at the San Francisco Apple Store, there’s a rumor that Diggnation will be doing something down in the Palo Alto Apple Store, not to mention a whole bunch of AT&T stores across the area prepping for a mob scene which they’ve never experienced.

So, right in between those two big Apple Stores on both sides of the Peninsula is my local store, the Apple Store Burlingame. It’s not a big store (the Palo Alto one is a bit bigger, the San Francisco one is much bigger), but it’s still a nice size, and plenty of people have shown up for past OS X parties there, and we’ve had a smash.

So what’s the point of this post? Well, it’s universal knowledge now that all of the Apple (and AT&T) Stores will be closing up at 2 PM local time next Friday (the 29th). About an hour or so after the store has closed and the line starts forming, we’ll be recording a live iPhone edition of PreviewCast #036 outside of the store. Robert Preston will be there, I’ll be there, and we’ll try to get one or two other local regulars to show up. Sorry, we can’t afford to fly Larry in or get him on teleconference. Plus, we’ll be interviewing the people in line! That’s right, unexpecting people will be invited to share their iPhone expectations on the show. If you want to participate, all you have to do is show up in line!

Anyway, if you’re in the area, and you don’t feel compelled to watch Scott Bourne single-handedly rob an entire Apple Store of their entire iPhone supply up north, drop on by as we talk about the iPhone once more before handling it, and have a good time!

For more information, updates, or to say that you’ll be there, check out the Upcoming event listing. (And yes, this means there will be no episode this weekend. Sorry, but all of us have family commitments this weekend, and there’s not much non-iPhone related news to talk about anyway.)

LATEST UPDATE: Apple has officially announced that the stores will be closing at 2 PM to set up for the iPhone. This certainly surprised me, especially considering that AT&T isn’t closing down until 4 or 4:30. We aren’t going to be doing a 4 hour PreviewCast, but we’ll probably move up an hour to 3 PM so that we can catch a bit more of the action (and get to our park bench earlier), plus have an opportunity for some more interviews with people in line, which could possibly make for an exciting after show.
Anyway, I am officially moving the start time of our recording up to 3 PM. Hope to see you there!

PreviewCast #035: Get A New Browser

Did you think that the WWDC Keynote was dissappointing or underwhelming? Well, we’ve got the perfect remedy for you: The craziest and loudest episode of PreviewCast ever. This episode has parodies, bloopers, outtakes, music videos, weird positions when sleeping, cranks, arguments, crazy monkey noises, and the longest browser war we’ve ever had. In this episode, everybody is an idiot, and everybody hates each other.

The WWDC Keynote opened with PC pretending to be Steve Jobs, so we decide to have Larry pretend to be Douglas. That doesn’t work though, because he can’t stop laughing. During the keynote, Electronic Arts is moving its games to the Mac. Larry thinks it’s a good thing, Douglas thinks that it doesn’t matter, but none of us care that much. But the TOP SECRET features in Leopard have been revealed! And… they amount to not much more than just a new Desktop, a new Finder, and Quick Look. There’s different opinions on how great these are, but those idiots over at MacBreak Weekly assert that nobody uses the pathetic and useless icon view in Finder. They’re crazy! The rest of Leopard was just a repeat of last year, although Phil Schiller morphing into Steve Ballmer was cool. Maybe Larry should morph into Douglas? Uh, no. Just no. Douglas claims that Apple’s announcement of Safari for Windows means that Hell is going through a new Ice Age. Larry, on the other hand, thinks it’s a good idea, and Ethyn absolutely loves Safari 3 on his Windows machine. Who knows which one will be right, but it sparks the biggest, loudest, and longest browser war that we’ve ever had on PreviewCast. Meanwhile, Apple is completely pushing developers over a cliff when first they only release Leopard beta to WWDC attendees, and then tell developers that if they want on the iPhone, they’ve got to do it through second-class AJAX Safari apps. Oh, and if you don’t like Father’s Day, Larry tells you how you can Get a New Daddy.

All this and way too much more on this exhaustingly wacky episode of PreviewCast!

PreviewCast #034: SuperPoke!

Well, it wasn’t the super-star cast we had expected for this episode, it was more like a couple of replacements that we gathered together for the last minute. But who cares? We still had a good ep filled with WWDC predictions, and funny/stupid/random/ jokes. Larry missed this one, and while we were afraid he had been kidnapped or abducted by aliens, it turns out he was only abducted by some of his friends. (Larry plans to make his grand return to PreviewCast at our WWDC roundup episode!)

Douglas thought he was innocently claiming his famed “webmacster87″ on another website when he registered on Facebook, when all of a sudden, his various intarweb friends and high school classmates started attacking his inbox with friend requests and Wall postings, and Skoker in his infinite wisdom poked Douglas. Which sounds weird, until you hear about the latest Facebook app: Superpoke! Um, ok. I’m fully expecting a deep-fried pickle heart cooker app on Facebook any day now. Moving on, Apple announces brand new MacBooks and MacBook Pros, which are only significant enough to push our laptops further behind. But Apple quietly and suspiciously drops the “two year contract” stipulation from their iPhone ads, could this mean a GoPhone iPhone? Apple’s Get a Mac Ads win the Grand Effie Award, but we don’t really think that they’re the “most effective” advertisements out there. Douglas sings the praises of the just-updated Camino 1.5, but Robert prefers Netscape 9. And then, everyone brings up and discusses their wants and rumors for Steve’s WWDC Keynote, like the rumor that Steve will wear a black turtleneck and blue jeans, and that Apple will preview a feature complete copy of Leopard!

Be sure to watch MacRumors Live tomorrow at 1 PM Eastern for keynote coverage (or else sign up for one of the notification services), and enjoy this superpoked edition of PreviewCast!
