PreviewCast #023: Show Us Your “Eww”

So it wasn’t live, but it wasn’t bad. The biggest news of the week: Windows Vista is FINALLY out, ready to be infested by viruses of all kinds. Meanwhile, more stinky stuff about the Zune surfaces, and so we just refuse to keep out mouths shut. Meanwhile, each of us tries to further annoy each other with various tactics, making for an interesting, entertaining, but annoying episode.

Anyway, after almost a month and disappearing somewhere at Apple’s facilities, Robert’s MacBook is FINALLY back from the shop. Meanwhile, a rumor circulates about an upcoming Apple Special Event on February 1st, and we debate whether or not that looks credible. Windows Vista is released, and it’s kind of a ho-hum moment. Yet, Microsoft stages a contest dubbed Show Us Your “Wow”. Uh, no. Starbucks may be filling your iPod in addition to your cup in the future, but not in the EU, where a few countries are fighting against iTunes’ FairPlay agreement. As for the Zune, it now seems that you can’t even “squirt” most of the songs on the Zune Marketplace to other Zunes after all–the record companies saw to that! Leo Laporte tells us why he hates the Zune, and Robert tells everyone why both Doug’s laugh and Doug’s tastes in music deserve the first ever nega-Larryhead rating. But it’s not all sad stuff, as Douglas sings the praises of Twitterific and Robert of his Xbox 360.

*This episode introduces the first ever nega-Larryhead rating, which basically consists of negative numbers. The new image for this is a Larryhead facing sideways (left), as seen below.

All this and a “holy heck of a hockeystick” lot more on this episode of PreviewCast!

PreviewCast LIVE Tomorrow on TalkShoe

One of those quantum theories goes like this: “Whenever an observer tries to observe an object, the object being observed will always be somewhat affected by the observer.” Well, we at PreviewCast have decided that we want to be affected by some observers, and the more observers the better!

We will be taking our randomness over to TalkShoe tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 PM EST for a special episode recorded live in front of our audience. We will not be producing all of our shows on TalkShoe, but tomorrow will be a test for us to see if we’d like to start doing regular live shows like monthly or something, etc., or it may just be a one-time deal.

We will be recording the episode the same way I record the normal episodes–just us talking. Following the recording, you will be able to hear that recording on TalkShoe 30-60 minutes after the end of the show, or if you wait till Tuesday-ish, you’ll get to hear the full version with the intro music, music break, album art, and any other goodies that may apply.

But the real point of the live episode is not so that you can just listen live, we want you to participate! If you register on TalkShoe and download their TalkShoe Live! client, then you will be able to participate in the show’s chatroom while listening live. Even cooler, you can also call in to the show live via phone, VoIP, or Skype (good luck w/ Skype!), and participate in the episode. Tomorrow, any time after 4:15 PM EST, click on the purple “Listen, Chat, or Call In Live!” button that appears on this page to join in. I also have an article on my blog on setting up Gizmo Project to call in free on TalkShoe.

We hope to see you tomorrow for a fun live episode of PreviewCast!

On the Aftermath of Another Successful Upgrade

They said it couldn’t be done. Well, actually, I don’t know if anyone said it couldn’t be done. More likely, no one really cared. But regardless, PreviewCast.com is now running live under WordPress 2.1! And, Larry doesn’t like it because it looks more like WordPress.com than anything else. Me? I’m used to it. But who cares? We are now up-to-date, and not a single post, comment, or Stewart’s bottle lost!

In addition to the WordPress 2.1 upgrade, some other things happened as a side effect:
–PodPress got upgraded to the latest 7.1 release, which was just released today
–Akismet got upgraded to the latest 2.0 version of the plugin, for all that spam that we don’t get :)
–We updated to the latest K2 0.95 RC1 release which supposedly adds WordPress 2.1 support, found out that it’s REALLY REALLY REALLY buggy, downgraded back to K2 0.91 without a problem, and now are waiting for the horses to kick out a stable release. (Get it? Horses. Stable. Ha ha, I crack myself up!)
–Full, live updates about the upgrade were posted on my Twitter, a PreviewCast first!

Not everything is exactly the same on the frontend (but not much has changed either), and a lot has changed on the backend. However a few things are different, including, for example, the disappearance of our links. Either the old version of K2 still doesn’t like them or the WordPress Widgets plugin can’t display it right or it’s just something weird with the new system, but our links ain’t going anywhere. However, a refresh/update of our links have been overdue, so we’ll be working on it, and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on all the themes/plugins being updated to WP 2.1 to keep this site fresh and up-to-date.

Anyway, thanks for hanging on for the two hour downtime! Hope to see you Sunday for our live episode of PreviewCast!

PreviewCast #022: Michelle, What is Love?

Oh well, the hopes and dreams of a calmer episode of PreviewCast were not realized this time. Between Larry’s favorite song “What is Love?”, Ara accidentially calling Mitchell “Michelle,” and super-high amounts of post-Macworld depression, this episode was one big downer. But it was still pretty good, for PreviewCast standards.

The Apple TV and the iPhone were Macworld’s only two stars this year, and we’re all pretty disappointed with both of them. We go through what’s okay, what could be better, and what downright sucks. Meanwhile, Douglas was at Macworld, and he lost his camera there, and Larry shames him for that. Ara surprises us with a pop quiz, but he doesn’t get any serious answers…oh well! Meanwhile Doug found out that OmniWeb doesn’t quite work as demoed. Some funny new Get a Mac ads are out, we go through what’s good and what’s weird. Meanwhile, Larry and Doug talk about Twitter, and we try to get Mitchell to speak long enough to review his new headphones. And yes, Doug had some bleeping to do.

All that and more on this post-Macworld episode of PreviewCast!

PreviewCast.com Downtime Scheduled

Well, I actually kinda cheated and posted this notice after posting episode #022, but conventional wisdom says that when you have a brand new episode out, you put that on the top of the website, so I’ve backdated this post. Actually, conventional wisdom also says that you don’t take a site down right after you release an ep as well, hence why our WordPress 2.1 upgrade has been scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday) at 8 PM EST. The website will be down as long as it takes to update the site, hopefully not more than an hour. Again, it’s up to the willingness of technology to cooperate (hah!).

Anyway, just the official complimentary happy courtesy notice. :)
