PreviewCast #009: The Douglas Bell Show Needs No Sound Effects

This is what happens when you miss a week of PreviewCast: you miss a lot of great stuff, and then you start playing catch-up on the episode, and then the episode becomes almost two hours long! And, of course, without Larry here to regulate, things get way out of hand. As usual.

Apple’s Showtime event reveals an updated 5th Generation iPod, along with a brand new 2nd Generation iPod nano and a brand-spanking cool (and easy to lose) 2nd Generation iPod shuffle. But no, there’s no iPhone and no touchscreen iPod, which goes to prove beyond doubt that this pre-keynote “photo” was Photochopped. Meanwhile, Microsoft shares details about it’s Zune player, and we stack it up against the iPod. Apple’s moved everything around in iTunes 7, and we’re still trying to find our way around it on here! It does have some nice new features, though. Plus, iTunes movies are popular: 125,000 sold in the first week. Why aren’t other studios hopping aboard yet? They’re all teamed up with Amazon’s Unbox, which received a “two thumbs down” rating from a senior editor of Fortune magazine. Meanwhile, Apple Legal sent a cease and desist letter to Podcast Ready, saying that “Podcast” is their trademark! Leo Laporte proposes replacing the word “podcast” with “netcast”. What should we do? Also, in benchmarking, the 2.33 GHz iMac Core 2 Duo actually beat out the Mac Pro in many tests. Adobe previews CS3 and Microsoft reveals a little bit about Office 2007 for Mac, and behold, both apps are Universal! Plus, when Mitchell doesn’t think that this podcast is called The Douglas Show, he’s driving everyone crazy with his ridiculous sound effects.

PreviewCast #008: Would Grandparents Download Movies?

It’’s Grandparents Day, and Larry has gone AWOL on us. Douglas was able to recruit Robert Preston to come back and bail him out, but our attempts to make an episode less than an hour long turned out to be in vain.

Well, all of us are suffering now! Larry started back at school last Wednesday, although Douglas and Robert are approaching completing one month of school. Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter, got permanently stung by a stingray. The iMacs get updated to a Core 2, and the Mac minis get updated to a second core (much to the dismay of Douglas). Apple also admits that the MacBook has insomnia and will repair computers under warranty. And, the latest Apple patent filing reveals…a new Cube? Also, the Mac web has gone crazy over Apple’’s Showtime event, and we take our final crackdown on all the rumors before Tuesday’s event. And Douglas’ birthday is in less than 3 weeks…just an FYI.

PreviewCast #007: The Longest Thread Ever

In this episode, we prove to the world (as if we needed to) that we really know the definition of randomness. This record-breaking 96 minute episode is full of laughs, although who knows if you”ll be able to listen to it all in one sitting!

Digg’’s lawyers advise them to follow Apple with the trademark fun, meanwhile Burger King introduces the FryPod french fry holder. No Apple Cease and Desist letter for them, yet. Three new Get a Mac ads hit the web, and we choose our favorite ads. Firefox 2.0 Beta 2 is released, something Doug is excited about, and Larry and Ara couldn”t care less. Meanwhile, the rumor mill gets turned when Apple announces a September 12th Special Event. Will there be new Core 2 Duo iMacs? A new iPod nano? Or maybe some big iTunes movie announcement. Also, Douglas shares his Cell Phone Text Message Spam soap opera, and Ara and Larry both review the Wireless Mighty Mouse. And Ara surprises us with an unexpected review of…vomit?
