This is what happens when you miss a week of PreviewCast: you miss a lot of great stuff, and then you start playing catch-up on the episode, and then the episode becomes almost two hours long! And, of course, without Larry here to regulate, things get way out of hand. As usual.
Apple’s Showtime event reveals an updated 5th Generation iPod, along with a brand new 2nd Generation iPod nano and a brand-spanking cool (and easy to lose) 2nd Generation iPod shuffle. But no, there’s no iPhone and no touchscreen iPod, which goes to prove beyond doubt that this pre-keynote “photo” was Photochopped. Meanwhile, Microsoft shares details about it’s Zune player, and we stack it up against the iPod. Apple’s moved everything around in iTunes 7, and we’re still trying to find our way around it on here! It does have some nice new features, though. Plus, iTunes movies are popular: 125,000 sold in the first week. Why aren’t other studios hopping aboard yet? They’re all teamed up with Amazon’s Unbox, which received a “two thumbs down” rating from a senior editor of Fortune magazine. Meanwhile, Apple Legal sent a cease and desist letter to Podcast Ready, saying that “Podcast” is their trademark! Leo Laporte proposes replacing the word “podcast” with “netcast”. What should we do? Also, in benchmarking, the 2.33 GHz iMac Core 2 Duo actually beat out the Mac Pro in many tests. Adobe previews CS3 and Microsoft reveals a little bit about Office 2007 for Mac, and behold, both apps are Universal! Plus, when Mitchell doesn’t think that this podcast is called The Douglas Show, he’s driving everyone crazy with his ridiculous sound effects.
