PreviewCast #006: WHOIS for Two Peas in a P-Word

PreviewCast has been promoted to the Skype Roundtable (which isn”t exactly round, as described by Leo Laporte), as we are joined by Micheal Cottingham (better known on phpBB.com as Techie-Micheal, the Support Team Leader) to talk about all of the things that are wrong and right in the technological universe. Yes, Larry actually let a Windows user on PreviewCast!

Apple is trying to claim exclusive ownership of the phrase ”pod”, and since PreviewCast doesn’t have a team of lawyers to back us up, any and all use of the phrase “pod” on this episode is forbidden. Unfortunately, none of us did too well. Apple and Creative settled their legal disputes (with a $100 million license/bribe). And Apple and Dell announced the two largest consumer electronics recalls in history this past week, both of them for batteries manufactured by Sony. Huh? And Douglas reviews OmniDiskSweeper, the app that does something you probably already could do yourself.

Plus, AboutUs.org is taking personal information from WHOIS and posting it publicly. Micheal shares with us the results from his investigation and explains why what they’re doing is illegal on multiple levels. He also shares some ways to keep your information off the site.

All that and much more on this episode of PreviewCast!

PreviewCast #005: We Want Milkshakes!

Larry abandoned Douglas again so that he and a friend could go get gourmet milkshakes from some fancy place out of town. So, we welcome friend and PreviewCast listener Mitchell Joyce to join us on this episode.

Doug is back at school (already), and his schedule was instantly messed up, but then again, it’s his fault for picking such high-stakes classes. It has been leaked that Apple is planning to do movie downloads on iTunes, but could that be a good or bad thing for iTunes and its users? Apple promises users that it hasn’t gone MIA in Boot Camp by releasing an update to the Beta, however they are MIA when it comes to the Apple Expo in Paris this year. Douglas shares his all-time favorite joke (which no one gets), and Mitchell reveals why he likes Adium. Plus, a cameo appearance by…the PC Guy???

PreviewCast #004: Almost Live from WWWDC

This episode is going down in the PreviewCast history books. It’s the first video episode ever, the first episode to feature four idiotic co-hosts/guests, and the first video podcast episode to rival a feature film in length! (I can see it now, “PreviewCast Videocast Edition: Coming to a Theater Near You!”) But I digress. This episode introduces us to Larry’s wacky friends and is one of the funniest we’ve ever produced.

Larry betted himself into a corner and has been forced to use Firefox for 72 hours. Meanwhile, all of the technology that Doug owns that is no longer covered under warranty decides to break–all on the same day. What the heck??? Steve Jobs gives a keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference…but he forgot his “One more thing…”? A 64-bit Xeon Mac Pro and Xserve take the stage, and Leopard plans to send you back in time and kick Vista’s ass. Larry and Ara are addicts to Stewart’s Orange and Cream soda, however one of Larry’s bottles seem to have been intoxicated with nitrous oxide. Doug goes to WordCamp 2006 in San Francisco: he meets all of the WordPress developers and interviews Matt Mullenweg, and meanwhile Ara is jealous that he couldn’t go. And finally, either Skoker seriously needs to be taken in for psychiatric observation or he’s a poster boy for some magazine which promotes humiliating one’s self.

Our apologies for the bad quality of the video. iChat AV is to blame for this, and if you”d like the video quality to improve, send us a donation and we”ll sign up for T1 access.
